Here are a few must-visit spots:
Ableman’s Gorge State Natural Area
Located at E10651 County Road W, Rock Springs, WI 53961, Ableman’s Gorge is a geological marvel. This natural area features a stunning gorge cut by the Baraboo River through Baraboo quartzite, Cambrian sandstone, and conglomerate. The cliffs and rocky slopes rise about 200 feet above the river, creating a dramatic landscape. The site tells a fascinating geological story of changing conditions in an ancient sea that first rose quietly against a cliff of quartzite and then, as layers of sediments gradually decreased the relief between the sea floor and land, surged against the top of the cliff, wearing away quartzite and depositing a layer of cobbles and boulders across its upturned edge. Erosional forces and a former quarrying operation in the southern part of the natural area have re-exposed these long-buried layers. Nowhere in the Midwest is such a sequence of events so displayed. The trails are easy to navigate, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely hike.
Pewitt’s Nest State Natural Area
Just a short drive from Valley Springs Farm, Pewitt’s Nest is located at E10651 County Road W, Baraboo, WI 53913. This hidden gem features a 30- to 40-foot-deep gorge formed by Skillet Creek. The area is surrounded by lush forests and unique rock formations, making it a perfect spot for a peaceful hike leading to the mouth of the gorge as well as a lookout area on top of the cliffs.
Parfrey’s Glen State Natural Area
Parfrey’s Glen, is Wisconsin’s first State Natural Area and is unquestionably the most visited state natural area outside of Devil’s Lake State Park ,and is located at Hwy 113 south of Baraboo, WI. This spectacular gorge is deeply incised into the sandstone conglomerate of the south flank of the Baraboo Hills. The glen is home to a variety of rare plant species and offers a unique hiking experience. The trail is about 0.8 miles long and takes you through a mountain-type stream flowing through the floor of the glen. Visitors are allowed to hike the stream up to the pool below the waterfall, but may not go around or beyond the falls.
Natural Bridge State Park
Located at W8451 County Road Z, North Freedom, WI 53951, Natural Bridge State Park features a stunning natural bridge formed by glacial meltwater. The park offers a variety of hiking trails that allow you to explore the unique geological formations and enjoy the beautiful scenery. This weathered formation was missed by the glaciers during the last Ice Age. Near the bridge is a rock shelter used by native people when the glacier was melting, 11,000 years ago. The park is for day use only
